Maddox Womble
Maddox was born and raised in Dallas where he currently lives with his wife Natalie and their two kids, Lilly and Will. Maddox attended Highland Park High School and graduated from The University of Mississippi in 2007. The following year, Maddox pursued a career in oil and gas enterprise software that concluded in February 2022 when he decided to jump from the corporate world to nonprofit.
Maddox is passionate about strengthening families and fighting back against the fatherlessness epidemic that plagues 25% of children. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 19.5 million children, more than 1 in 4, live without a biological, step or adoptive father in the home. These heartbreaking statistics are why Maddox became a strong advocate for an amazing organization based in Tampa, FL called Family First where he oversaw development efforts in Texas and raised money for their two national programs, All Pro Dad and iMOM, both of which he credits for making him a better husband and father.
In August 2024, Maddox felt called into full-time ministry and joined Search in Dallas whose mission is centered on “inviting adults to take a next step toward God” through questions, answers and conversations.
However, this divine call was not clear at first and it didn’t happen overnight. Back in 2017 before Maddox became a born again believer in Jesus Christ, he was truly lost and his spiritual life had hit a dead end. To add insult to injury and after months of suffering in the dark, Maddox was diagnosed in March 2019 with a genetic blood disorder called hemochromatosis that prevents his body from properly releasing iron. The discovery of being overloaded with iron and at potential risk of major organ failure, led to 5+ years of frequent bloodletting via phlebotomy, a common procedure that Maddox still does to this day and will continue doing for the rest of his life. Special thanks to Dr. Marynick for restoring his overall health!
One of the hardest things he’s ever been through mentally and physically, Maddox wrestled spiritually in the beginning with accepting his new reality and harbored tons of unanswered questions. Enduring God’s faithful process of reconciliation taking effect daily on his “outer self” as it wasted away (2 Corinthians 4:16-18; 5:18-19), the adjustment was tough on every relationship that he held dear and without his friends, family and wife Natalie’s unwavering support, Maddox would have crumbled under the weight of it all.
At one point, the pressure from trying to push forward through such a crisis on his own strength without first seeking the kingdom of God (Matthew 6:33) created perpetual anger, anxiety, doubt, fear, hopelessness and unrest in Maddox. He refers to this whole season as his “personal wilderness” that God used for good (Romans 8:28) to get his attention, humble him and test what was in his heart (Deuteronomy 8:2).
Fast forward to 2023, one day after Maddox attended an Open Forum hosted by Search and experienced firsthand the uniquely cool environments they create for people to honestly discuss their different beliefs, stories and views, Maddox was reminded how needed these types of gatherings are in today’s culture and was inspired to learn more about the methodology of “relational evangelism.” Maddox soon figured out God’s will for his life and that there is no love like the perfect love of our Heavenly Father. Encouraging others on their own jagged journey of faith and leading people into a deeper relationship with Jesus is what Maddox realized he was meant to do.
Maddox has been a lifelong member at Highland Park Presbyterian Church where he was baptized in 1985 and has served as a deacon since 2020. In his spare time (when he is not wrangling kids), Maddox enjoys going to concerts, grilling out, listening to music, reading, spending time on the lake, throwing the frisbee, and traveling. Maddox never leaves home without his portable Bose speaker and his favorite book (not counting the Bible) is "My Utmost For His Highest" by Oswald Chambers.

Grungy Deacon is a blog and online platform that exists as a creative outlet for me to glorify God in action, deed, thought and word. I have a story to tell and I’m confident that being vulnerable about how hard it’s been to get here will encourage others in the same boat who are searching for truth in a world full of falsehoods. Years ago, I figured out that I enjoy writing, but up until now I never had a place where I could talk more openly about things in life that I believe matter, such as my hope in Jesus, my testimony about coming to Christ, and the transformative power of the Holy Spirit that radically changed me forever.
Grungy Deacon in no way, shape, or form is affiliated with the church I belong to or the ministry I work for but is simply an expression of my personal beliefs and views.
Grungy Deacon is a name that I came up with years ago that does allude to my adoration for 90s alternative and grunge music, but it has more to do with how I see myself as an imperfect servant of the universal church surrendered before a holy and perfect God.
GRUNGY = IMPERFECT

Statement of Faith
THE LORD JESUS CHRIST
I believe that Jesus Christ is the true Son of God and Savior of the world. Jesus is the way and the truth and the life and no one comes to God the Father except through Him. I believe that salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under Heaven given to man by which we must be saved. He who is fully God came to earth as a man, was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died to pay the penalty we owed for our sins, rose from the dead, ascended into Heaven, and will come again someday soon. Jesus is the firstborn of all creation, the cornerstone that the builder’s rejected, the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of God’s nature, upholding the universe by the word of His power.
(John 1:1–3, 14; John 14:6; Romans 3:23; Acts 4:12; Philippians 2:5–8; Colossians 1:15-17; Hebrews 1:1–3; 1 John 4:14-15, 5:11–12)
THE TRIUNE GOD
I acknowledge the Creator-God as our Heavenly Father, all-knowing, all-powerful and omnipresent, yet intimately acquainted with each one of us. I believe God is good, faithful, loving, and is patient, not wanting any to perish but everyone to come to repentance. I believe in one God who exists as three persons—God The Father, God The Son, and God The Holy Spirit—and that these three are one God with the same nature, attributes, and perfection and are worthy of the same love, trust, and obedience. I believe that God is the creator and sustainer of the universe, rules supremely over it, desires the worship of His creation, and pursues personal relationships with mankind, the pinnacle of His creation.
(Genesis 1:1; Deuteronomy 6:4; Psalm 103:19; Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 12:29; John 1:14; John 3:16; 2 Corinthians 13:14; Colossians 1:14-16; Hebrews 1:1-3; 1 Peter 1:2; 2 Peter 3:9; Revelation 1:4-6)
THE BIBLE
I believe that all scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. I place my confidence in the Bible as the divinely inspired Word of God without error. It is completely reliable as the final authority for all matters of faith and practice.
(1 Thessalonians 2:13; 2 Timothy 3:15–17; 2 Peter 1:20–21)
THE HOLY SPIRIT
I recognize the Holy Spirit as the third member of the Trinity who is constantly at work, convicting those who have sinned, comforting those who hurt, and guiding those who believe in Christ. He is our advocate and leads us into all truth. He regenerates the unbeliever, seals and baptizes the believer, and sets apart the believer to a holy life. Once we believe, the Holy Spirit dwells in our bodies fully and permanently.
(John 14:16-17, 26; Romans 8:9-11; Acts 1:5, 8; 1 Corinthians 6:19–20; Ephesians 1:13–14; Titus 3:5)
THE DEPRAVITY OF HUMANITY
I confess that we are all sinners, by birth and by choice. Our relationship with a holy, sinless God can only be restored through Christ’s work of salvation and death on the cross. I believe that if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
(Genesis 3; Psalm 51:5; Jeremiah 17:9; Romans 3:10–18, 23; 5:12; 1 John 1:9)
SALVATION
I believe that God’s free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ is available to everyone without exception. Those who receive it by faith, apart from works, receive the forgiveness of their sins and experience a restored relationship with God that results in permanent life-change.
(John 3:16; Romans 10:9–10; 1 Corinthians 15:1–5; Ephesians 1:4–12; 2:8–9)
ETERNITY
God has put eternity into man’s heart and even with our innate sense of knowing that this world is not our home, we can’t fathom the vastness of God’s ultimate plan beyond the present. But God promises that believers (those who confess faith in Jesus Christ) will enter into everlasting communion with Him at the moment of conversion and unbelievers (those who do not confess) will be condemned to everlasting separation from Him in hell. I believe that one day we will all be fully known, seeing God face to face and appearing before the judgment seat of Christ to give an account for our lives, whether good or bad. In the end, God will dwell with his people and Jesus will wipe away every tear, firmly establishing the Holy City (new Jerusalem), which will not need a sun or a moon because the light of God’s glory and the lamp of the Lamb will shine on everything forever.
(Ecclesiastes 3:11; John 11:23–27; 1 Corinthians 13:12; 2 Corinthians 5:10; Revelation 21)
THE BODY OF CHRIST & THE CHURCH
I believe in the universal church, which exists to proclaim God’s truth, to stimulate spiritual growth, to facilitate healthy relationships, to promote the unity of all believers, and to bring glory to God. I’m grateful to be a part of the body of Christ both worldwide and local. The church should be a witness to the love of God for all the world as manifested in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The ministry, worship, and teaching of each local church should creatively adapt to the specific culture it feels called to reach, but without compromising Biblical absolutes. I believe that every person who has believed that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and has accepted by faith His finished work on the cross as their gift of salvation is a member of the universal church, which began at Pentecost. As a Christian, each believer is a member of the church regardless of their standing or membership in localized assembly of believers. I believe that the Holy Spirit places each person into this church at the point of salvation without regard for gender, ethnicity, class, or culture.
(Matthew 16:16-18; 28:18-20; Acts 2:41-47; Galatians 3:27-28; Ephesians 1:13-14; Philippians 2:1–4; Colossians 3:11; Hebrews 10:24–25)
SATAN
I believe that Satan is a created angel and the author of sin. He is the devil, the father of lies and a murderer from the beginning. He incurred the judgment of God by rebelling against his Creator, by taking numerous angels with him in his fall, and by introducing sin into humanity. We’re told that the whole world is under Satan’s influence, and he prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour. Satan is the open and declared enemy of God and man. He has been defeated through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
(Genesis 3:1-5; Isaiah 14:12-17; Ezekiel 28:11-19; Matthew 25:41; John 8:44; Romans 16:20; 1 Peter 5:8; 1 John 5:19; Revelation 12:1-14)
THE RETURN OF CHRIST
I anticipate our Lord’s promised return, which could occur at any moment, in the twinkling of an eye. For those eagerly waiting for Him, only The Father knows the day and the hour of Christ’s second coming. When Jesus does come back to Earth again soon, He will be riding on a white horse, leading the armies of Heaven into battle against the spiritual forces of evil and will finally defeat the devil, sin and death forever with the breath of His mouth. Both the voice of an archangel and the sound of God’s trumpet will command those that have fallen asleep (a temporary state for believers who have previously died) to be bodily resurrected first just as Christ was resurrected. Then believers who are still alive will be caught up with them in the clouds to meet Jesus in the air and everyone will receive new heavenly bodies fit for eternity. Until then, I believe that we are to strive to live according to His Word, bearing fruit that will last by making disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit.
